bryface to release Various Topics on September 19th

We would like to welcome Bryan C. aka bryface! He hails from Vancouver, Canada, and comes from a background of writing Impulse Tracker tunes for dial-up BBS art groups in his adolescence.

After a long musical dry spell, in 2010 he released How To Dodge Lasers, a 14-track album consisting entirely of songs made using the KORG DS-10, a synthesizer/sequencer program for the Nintendo DS. Bryan has been regularly involved with the global DS-10 community, contributing tracks to compilations by members of DS10forum.

Bryan now turns his attention to the Game Boy in his latest full-length album — titled Various Topics — and hopes to offer a refreshing new perspective on writing music for the already popular platform. Various Topics’ uniquely illustrative approach to chipmusic comprises songs that feature a lush, organic sound and an unprecedented vitality.

Bryan’s refusal to be pigeonholed into any one musical genre, combined with his efforts to remain versatile and innovative, has resulted in this album traversing a wide and eclectic range of stylistic and conceptual territory. Lyrical, purposeful melodies that draw from all corners of chiptune’s rich history will find themselves playfully sparring with complex rhythmic textures that are as forceful as they are intricate. The songs themselves may be wildly different, but are unified by a common pursuit of compositional sophistication.

Artsy jargon aside, Various Topics’ highest aspiration is to make you forget that you’re listening to chipmusic at all; it hopes to go beyond the bleeps and bloops and scratchy noises, revealing the deeper emotional content embedded within.

We would like to share a track from Various Topics titled “rich bastard groove”:

Various Topics will be released on September 19th. Traditionally, TrueStar will be hosting a pre-release Noise Channel party for the album. The listeners will get to listen to the album before it will be available to download. Stay tuned!
